HORIZON Industrial completed another pipeline cleaning project in South Australia to clean an irrigation pipeline supplying water to a pastoral company. The flow through the pipeline was significantly restricted due to a build-up of manganese iron, silt, mud and sand.

Foam Pipeline Cleaning Pigs were run multiple times to thoroughly clean the 400 metre long DN200 pipeline.

A 30% increase in the flow rate through the pipeline was recorded to confirm the success of the pigging operations.

HORIZON Industrial has completed a contract to clean an RO Recovery Water pipeline for a major brewery in South Australia. The project entailed a number of important elements.

1. The customer had pigged the pipeline previously however, the pig had become lodged in the line and had not been recovered
2. When pigging the pipeline some years earlier the customer’s contractor had fitted a tracking transmitter inside the pig which had dislodged and had remained in the pipeline for over 6 years

The company recently completed a project in southern New South Wales to clean irrigation pipelines for farming communities. Due to the remoteness of the project satellite navigation equipment was deployed to mark and follow the location of the pipelines as they criss-crossed through open farmland. 

Medium Density Polyurethane Foam Pigs fitted with tracking & locating transmitters (to check the progress of each operation) were used to clean the pipelines ranging in size from 6” through 14”. Due to the length of some pipelines and the available pumping rates some of the pigging operations required continuous monitoring well into the night. 

Pipeline stakeholders noted significant improvement in flow rates to mark the success of the pigging operations.

A major Almond Producer in northwest Victoria has utilized the pigging services provided by HORIZON Industrial to clean their Irrigation pipeline. The pumping rates for the 2km long DN400 PVC pipeline had steadily declined due to a build-up of Manganese Iron and silt deposits fowling the internal bore. A significant increase in the pressure drop and increased pumping power consumption costs were telling factors in deciding to have the pipeline cleaned.

The project entailed dismantling a section of the line at the pumping station so a Pig could be inserted. At the other end the pipeline was exposed via an excavator and a section removed to fit an angled pipe section to allow debris and the pig to exit the pipeline. Once the Pig was inserted into the pipeline the pipe section was secured and the pumps started to launch the Pig. Pig Tracking & Locating Equipment provided by HORIZON was used to confirm the pig launch and to track the Pig along the length of the pipeline to establish the pig speed and calculate the approximate arrival time at the receiving point. 

As shown in the photos below the Pig removed a large volume of debris from the pipeline and a significant improvement in the flow rate was recorded.

The company recently provided a range of pigging services to clear 160,000 Litres of JET A1 from a DN350 Pipeline located at Port Botany, NSW.

The delicate operation included provision of a temporary pig launcher design by HORIZON along with a special pig designed to provide a high seal on the internal wall to prevent by-pass of product as it was pushed through into a storage tank.

The pipeline was scheduled to be relocated and as such had to be completely emptied and cleaned before the relocation work could proceed.

The pig was propelled by high pressure Nitrogen from a nitrogen generator hired for the project.

The customer was very pleased with the operation. The pipeline showed almost no trace of residual JET A1 after being cleared and the relocation work went ahead successfully.

Horizon Industrial successfully completed a Pigging Services contract to clean 3”, 4” & 6” reticulated water mains for Georgetown Shire in far North Queensland.

In addition to cleaning the town’s water supply pipelines the alliance also cleaned a Raw Water Mains Pipeline running from a dam to the treatment plant.

High efficiency cleaning pigs were propelled down through Fire Hydrant connections via a specially adapted pig launching device. By opening and closing strategic valves the pigs were directed to specific outlet points in the system.

The results of field testing have shown that Pipeline Pigging is approximately 9 times more effective than other pipe cleaning methods such as Flushing and Air Scouring.
