HORIZON Industrial was recently engaged to provide the detailed design, manufacture and supply of special custom-made Pig Handling Equipment for a Pipeline Owner/Operator in Victoria

The equipment included Pig Handling Trolleys for various pipeline sizes and Pig types along with a Trailer-Mounted Pig Transportation System.

The customer brief centred around the ability to provide a means of safely handling Process Type Pigs when loading into pig launchers, unloading from Pig Receivers and transporting them to and from their various facilities in Victoria. In addition, the handling equipment would need to accommodate ILI Inspection tools for periodic pipeline surveys.

Foam Pigs, Mandrel type Process Pigs such as Bi-directional Disc or Cup type above 8” in size and ILI Inspection tools are too heavy for manual handling practices.

How do Pig Handling Trolleys work?

When loading a Pig in readiness for launching the Pig is placed on the Pig Handling Trolley tray and the Trolley is then wheeled into position in front of the open launcher chamber, positioned centrally and at the correct height then locked in position. The Pig is then pushed into the Pig Launcher chamber using a series of push rods connected to a saddle which is moved forward and backward via pulleys and a cable winch system. The Pig is pushed into the chamber of the launcher until it engages in the reducer. Once in position the handling trolley is disengaged, wheeled away and the launcher closure is secured in readiness for the pigging procedure.

When the Pig arrives at the other end of the pipeline a Pig Handling Trolley is deployed to pull the Pig out of the Pig Receiver. The Trolley is wheeled into position in front of the open receiver chamber, positioned centrally and at the correct height then locked in position. The end of the Pig is connected via a cable hook then pulled out of the Pig Receiver chamber and onto the Trolley tray using pulleys and a cable winch system.

The Pig Handling Trolleys are also used to move Pigs around the facility or to be placed onto transportation vehicles for delivery back to the start of the pipelines. 

The Handling Trolleys can be provided in a range of materials and fitted with operating features such as a fixed height or adjustable height arrangement, electric winches, stainless steel cables and pulleys, ground-mounted running tracks and adjustable height outrigger stabilisers to prevent the trolley from unbalancing or to account for uneven ground.

Transportation Cradles mounted onto a purpose-built trailer with an electric Jib Crane enable safe handling and relocation of pigs to multiple-site operational facilities.

Some of the features of the trailer-mounted pig transportation system included electric jib crane with 300kgs lift capacity (powered by the towing vehicle battery), fully galvanized heavy-duty trailer construction, multi-diameter pig cradle, multiple tie points to secure the load, dual wheels for towing stability, outrigger stabilisers to prevent unbalancing or to account for uneven ground.

HORIZON Industrial has been awarded a purchase order to supply a large quantity of ‘Superswab' Lightweight Foam Pipeline Pigs in various sizes for periodic maintenance of pipelines at a mining site.

The Pipeline Pigs will be used to clean HDPE Pipelines throughout the plant to remove scale deposits and debris which form over time as part of the production process employed by the end user. The pigs are manufactured in various diameters from 2lbs/cu.ft. high-strength open-cell polyurethane foam and feature a machine-applied polyurethane coating on the rear to prevent by-pass and assist propulsion. 

The Pigs were packaged to prevent ingress of moisture and shipped on dedicated transport directly to the minesite.

‘Superswabs’ produced by HORIZON Industrial are also commonly used throughout the pipeline construction industry for dewatering and drying gas pipelines, for “proving” pipelines and for water & wastewater pipeline cleaning projects.

HORIZON Industrial has completed a contract to design, manufacture and supply a Pig Launcher & Receiver, Process Pipeline Pigs and Special Tracking Pigs for a new Lime Slurry Pipeline in Kwinana, Western Australia.

The design of the Pig Traps features Quick Opening Closures produced by Stark Solutions USA. The Stark Model S-500 Horizontal Threaded Closure was selected due to robust construction, proven reliability and cost-effectiveness.

HORIZON Industrial has completed the detailed design, manufacture and supply of Two (2) DN250 316 Stainless Steel Pig Launchers for a sewerage pipeline in Sydney, NSW.

The Launchers will provide an effective means of cleaning interconnecting sewerage pipelines which service major residential areas within the Sydney metropolitan area. 

Some of the safety features on the Pig Launchers include vent valves, drain valves and pressure indicators. Manual Reset Visual Flag type Pig Signallers are also installed to provide positive confirmation of pig launch.

T-Type Simplex Basket Strainers have been successfully trialled for a Queensland based provider of diesel powered waste and energy solutions, and developed for local and international resource companies. As most of the Systems are containerised the selection criteria centered around equipment which could provide compact size, a range of Screen sizes, effective dirt handling capacity and low differential operating pressure. Simplex type Pipeline Strainers are installed to capture foreign particles and debris from process flow streams to protect downstream equipment such as pumps, valves, gauges, instrumentation and other critical equipment.  

A “basket”, “screen” or “element” is fitted inside the body of the strainer which is sized to capture optimum sized particles. The construction of the element can be Perforated Metal, Wire Mesh, Woven Wire Mesh or a combination of these materials. When the internal element (basket) becomes clogged the strainer is isolated from the flow stream and the element is removed for cleaning or replacement via a blank cover plate or blind flange on top of the strainer body.

Common materials of construction are Cast Iron, Cast Steel or Cast Stainless Steel and the standard size range is 1” (25mm) through 20” (500mm). Simplex Basket Strainers are often selected for installations where the dimensional envelope is restricted as they are compact, have a relatively large basket area to bore ratio, provide a low differential operating pressure, easy to install and robust construction for reliability in service.

HORIZON Industrial has supplied a number of Basket Strainers for a new oilfield development project in South Australia.

T-Type fabricated Basket Strainers were supplied for various duties in sizes ranging from 3” (DN80) through 6” (DN150) and pressure ratings up to ANSI 600lb.

 A unique feature of the strainer design was the inclusion of Quick Opening Closures for accessing the strainer baskets during change-outs. Quick Opening Closures provide fast access whilst maintaining a high level of operator safety through early warning devices such as pressure bleed screws.

In addition some strainers are fitted with Pleated Strainer Baskets to provide a substantial increase in the open surface area. This feature significantly increases the time between screen change-outs to save on operational and maintenance costs.

 Full Quality Assurance and MDR Documentation packages were supplied with each Strainer.

A Pigging Services contract to clean 3”, 4” & 6” reticulated water mains for Georgetown Shire in far North Queensland was successfully completed by HORIZON Industrial.

In addition to cleaning the town’s water supply pipelines the alliance also cleaned a Raw Water Mains Pipeline running from a dam to the treatment plant.

High efficiency cleaning pigs were propelled down through Fire Hydrant connections via a specially adapted pig launching device. By opening and closing strategic valves the pigs were directed to specific outlet points in the system.

The results of field testing have shown that Pipeline Pigging is approximately 9 times more effective than other pipe cleaning methods such as Flushing and Air Scouring. HORIZON Industrial has over 80 years collective experience in the design and supply of Pigging Equipment, supply of Pipeline Pigs and provision of Pigging Services.

With allowances for breaks during the summer months, holiday periods and the completion of a new water treatment plant, the contract took approximately 9 months overall.

Air Scouring is a proven method of efficiently removing bio-films, sediment and other debris from the internal bore of reticulated water mains. The method employs the injection of filtered compressed air into the water mains to form 'slugs'. The air/water combination along with an increase in the flow velocity removes the solids, sludge, particulates and other foreign matter from the internal walls of the pipeline.
